Real World Leadership Experience

Chris Waugh is the President and owner of On The Fly, Inc. She works as a consultant with leaders and teams that want to soar, and provides customized tools, training and inspiration. She thinks and speaks about the skills that lead you to success.

A motivating keynote speaker from Oregon, Chris is the author of four books: Leadership In Change, Flying by the Seat of Your Pants, Updrafts: Insights that Lend Wings to Your Success, and Misty Memories of Guard Island. She is a featured author in Speaking of Success, along with Ken Blanchard, Jack Canfield, Stephen Covey, and other success experts. She also writes "Success On The Fly," a weekly column for the business section of the Newport NewsTimes.

Before she was old enough to work, Chris volunteered over a year in a local hospital. When she was an employable age, they hired her. She secured a scholarship and went to the community colledge and studied business. She supported herself during those fledgling years, became a nurse's aide, and built an awareness of the importance of serving - her patients, their families, the nurses and doctors, and her co-workers.

Then her path lead into the banking industry, where she started as a bank teller and began a ten-year climb that lead to her position as a commercial loan officer. She learned the financial details of management, but noticed that money wasn't enough to ensure success of a business enterprise. She began to study the personalities of successful people, and the relationships within thriving operations.

In her next career, she created and built a group of tourist attractions and managed them over the span of fifteen years, along with a restaurant and two retail shops. With dozens of Gen-X and Gen-Y minimum wage employees, she experimented and refined her successful leadership style, ultimately accepting an international customer service award on behalf of her staff.

Then, as chief operations officer for a medical device manufacturing plant, Chris traveled extensively to market the product, while leading a self-directed work team to qualify for ISO 9002 certification, and move the factory to a new location - without a hiccup in production. She discovered that the motivation and productivity issues for these highly compensated employees were the same ones she faced with minimum wage teenagers. Her inspiring leadership insights evolved further from those lessons.

Chris draws insights from her other life experiences. She started singing in a jazz ensemble, Past Forward, which is giving her fresh new insights on creativity and innovation. As an advanced hang glider pilot, Chris has discovered the importance of flexibility and the ability to wing it in a turbulent world. She finds lessons from kids, pets, and people in the grocery line. She learns from the joys and sorrows of life. She even learned a valuable insight on teamwork when she almost drowned on a white-water raft trip.

She walks her talk, and shares her insights.
